Musical Instrument Museum

The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) will celebrate the similarities and differences of the world’s cultures as expressed through music – a language common to us all. With musical instruments from every country in the world, MIM will pay homage to the history and diversity of instruments and introduce museum guests to their varied and unique sounds. MIM will be an engaging, entertaining and informative experience, in which the uninitiated and the knowledgeable, the young and the old will feel welcome. MIM’s 190,000 square foot building in Phoenix, Arizona will open April 24, 2010. Further information on MIM may be found at www.themim.org.

Guest Servces Supervisor

MIM is looking for an enthusiastic and energetic individual to assist with the operations and management of the Guest Services department. The Guest Services department will ensure a positive guest experience which reinforces the MIM brand for approximately 250,000 visitors a year. This position will be integral in maintaining admission and membership sales, box office management and ticket sales for a 300-seat music theater, supervision of Guest Services representatives, and maintenance of the audio system issued to all guests. This is an exciting opportunity to help introduce guests to the world of musical instrument and create a responsive, guest oriented culture at MIM.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist with the daily operations and management of Guest Services staff and volunteers.
  • In coordination with Guest Services Manager, create and administer events, promotions, ticket content and reports in the ticketing system for Museum and Theater events
  • Prepare and print Will-Call tickets as necessary
  • Station ticket sales or telephone positions as needed
  • Handle large volumes of financial transactions, and settle cash drawers at the end of each shift or day
  • Handle miscellaneous other functions such as wheelchair check out, bag check, lost and found, switchboard function, supply ticket stock, etc.
  • In the absence of the Guest Services Manager, oversee all aspects of the department
  • Other duties as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Some supervisory or management experience in Guest Services in a museum, performing arts organization or similar institution.
  • Box office experience strongly preferred. Direct experience with The Patron Edge and The Patron Edge Online a plus.
  • Strong computer skills in Windows-based applications, including Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to cheerfully exercise patience and sound judgment in a variety of situations, especially in direct interactions with the public.
  • Love for world music and musical instruments a plus!

Museum Store Supervisor

Managing the day-to-day operations of the museum store for MIM—the world’s first global music museum by assisting the retail manager in establishing and continuously implementing policies and procedures for the department.

Recognizing that the museum store is an extension of the guest experience, the museum store supervisor will endeavor to make the store an exciting shopping destination and a profitable business by ensuring best practices established for museum retail and providing a high level of customer service.

Reports to the Retail Manager

Responsibilities Include:

  • Hiring, training, and evaluating sales associates and volunteers, including processing all forms associated with staffing.
  • Supervising the store staff to ensure that the museum store is cleaned and organized daily and that sales associates and volunteers receive frequent updates about store products and museum policies and events.
  • Effectively operating CounterPoint SQL and acting as the liaison with the service provider.
  • Accurately reconciling daily cash receipt reports and deposits and maintaining timely communication with the MIM accounting department.
  • Planning and implementing work schedules to ensure sufficient coverage for the store and special events.
  • Reviewing and submitting for approval time cards for retail staff.
  • Supervising the assistant buyer in processing damaged and defective merchandise reports and interdepartmental charges.
  • Assisting with the development and maintenance of strong inventory management and controls.
  • Assisting the retail manager with developing department policy and procedure manuals.
  • Assisting with cycle counts and annual inventory.
  • Working in the store during peak hours and special events to maximize sales and ensure a high level of customer service.
  • Maintaining the visual merchandise plans as directed by retail manager.
  • Oversee and/or perform shop opening and closing functions.

Experience/Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in business, music, or fine arts and two to four years related retail supervisory experience in a museum store.
  • Proficiency with CounterPoint SQL, Outlook, Excel, and Word are essential.
  • Superlative customer service skills are required in order to assist with establishing and implementing policies for the store and ongoing training.
  • Proven organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills are essential.
  • The ability to effectively write reports, procedures, and business correspondence, as well as effectively present information to MIM staff, guests, and vendors is required.
  • The ability to accurately compute rates and percentages and prepare sales information in report format is required.
  • The ability to process transactions efficiently and resolve customer service issues graciously are essential.
  • The ability to work flexible hours and lift and move merchandise up to 40lbs is required.

Assistant Buyer

Essential Duties:
Assist the retail manager in all aspects of buying and merchandising product for the museum store of the world’s first global music museum. The assistant buyer will recognize the importance of the museum store as an extension of the guest experience and will make the store an exciting shopping destination and a profitable business by assisting with all aspects of buying and merchandising. This position is designated for a one year term with the possibility of an extension.


Responsibilities Include:
  • Supporting the retail manager in establishing strong vendor relationships.
  • Understanding the mission statements of both the MIM and retail operations in order to enhance the museum experience for each guest while helping generate revenue for the Museum.
  • Assisting the store manager in placing orders and re-orders; receiving merchandise; and updating item and vendor records in Counterpoint SQL.
  • Processing transfers and damaged/defective merchandise reports, as well as returns to vendors.
  • Generating sales and inventory reports as determined by retail manager in order to review and analyze sales, costs, and profitability.
  • Supporting the retail manager in all aspects of product development, including sourcing, clearing rights, and coordinating production with vendors.
  • Working with MIM editor and graphic designer to create product copy and store signage.
  • Maintaining product information handbooks for sales associates and organizing training sessions related to store product and the MIM collection.

Experience/Qualifications:

School and Group Tour Coordinator

Job Responsibilities

  • Field all incoming requests for group tours, including school groups
  • Schedule and coordinate all group tours within the Patron Edge, Artifax and a volunteer scheduling system
  • Serve as primary point of contact with teachers and tour organizers, from the initial inquiry through the post-tour evaluation.
  • Distribute printed tour materials, such as pre- and post-visit school packets, confirmation letters, and evaluations, and collect and account for deposits and final payments.
  • Oversee docent scheduling and supervision and assist with docent training programs.
  • Prepare weekly tour schedules for MIM staff.

  • Ability to work under pressure, to multi-task, and to be self-motivated.

Membership/Data Entry Specialist

Summary: The Membership/Data Entry Specialist is responsible for input of member info as well as creating and mailing membership packets. Analyzing and correcting duplicate records, merging records, entering and updating records, entering gift and membership data. The position also assists with query and report writing.

  • Responsible for data accuracy, integrity, and security of all constituent records, and for maintaining and enhancing the highly confidential data of Raiser’s Edge database system.

Grant Writing Internship

Home to the largest concentration of ancient rock carvings in the region, Arizona State University’s Deer Valley Rock Art Center is not only a regional destination but also a research lab for rock art studies worldwide. We offer a talented and strategic writer the opportunity to help shape our future, meeting the creative challenges the current economy requires of even the most vibrant and well-positioned cultural institutions.

As a public outreach component of the ASU School of Human Evolution and Social Change, our visitor center offers a community museum, a full calendar of events and research facilities on a 47-acre nature preserve and trails for viewing more than 1,500 petroglyphs ranging from 800 to 5,000 years of age.
Duties Research potential funders, write compelling cases for support, and help develop public, private and nonprofit partnerships for our educational research, programs, festivals and facilities. Work closely with the director of the Center and with ASU’s Office of Research and Sponsored Projects and ensure compliance with university and sponsor guidelines.


Qualifications and Hours: Experience in grant writing is required. Background in business administration or nonprofit studies is ideal. General Internship Description

Description of Agency and Function: Historic Heritage Square located inside Heritage & Science Park, is comprised of several beautifully restored turn of the 20th century homes (including the 1895 Rosson House) and buildings located on what was part of the original Phoenix town site during the late 1800s. Today, the park itself is part of Phoenix’s downtown Copper Square.

The Rosson House - Heritage Square Foundation & Guild, a non-profit organization, provides docents/volunteers, educational programs, special events and historical activities for visitors of all ages at Historic Heritage Square in downtown Phoenix. Our mission: To preserve and interpret the Rosson House Museum through collections for the time period of 1895 through 1915 and to serve as stewards of Heritage Square.

Deer Valley Art Rock Center

Communications Technology Internship

DVRAC is run by ASU’s School of Human Evolution and Social Change. It includes
a visitor center with exhibits and research facilities on a 47-acre nature preserve
protecting more than 1,500 petroglyphs that range from 5,000 to 800 years old.
This is the largest concentration of ancient rock carvings in the region!

A recent survey of visitor demographics at the Deer Valley Rock Art Center (DVRAC)
shows that adults between the ages of 18 and 25 are the least represented group
at the museum despite its affiliation with Arizona State University. How can the
Center bolster efforts to reach this audience? DVRAC invites an intern to help
market the Center through Podcasts, YouTube, virtual tours, Facebook and other
online community forums.

Duties: Research strategic efforts made by other art and cultural
institutions in Arizona and creatively market the Center through similar technological resources.

Qualifications: Background in Internet, Web Design/Graphic Technology, and/or Marketing.

Commitment: Hours are flexible but we prefer that students work at least 10-20 hours per week for a minimum of ten weeks.

Children's Museum of Phoenix

Internships Available

Internships available at the Children’s Museum of Phoenix. The Children's Museum of Phoenix encourages individuals of all disciplines, interests and ages to apply for short-term internships.

The CMoP Internship Program provides emerging leaders with the opportunity to investigate and participate in the operations of a museum, particularly in the areas of development, marketing and education.

Internships are unpaid, although benefits include personal career mentoring and resume-building assistance from museum staff, as well a valuable research and project-management work. University credit may also be available.

Acting on the principle that learning is a joy, the Children’s Museum of Phoenix’s mission is to engage the minds, muscles and imaginations of children and the grown-ups who care about them. With hands-on, interactive exhibits designed for children ages birth to 10, the museum focuses on learning through play, with emphasis on early childhood development and school-readiness. The Bead Museum

Three Internships
Educational Programming Intern

Duties:  The intern will develop traveling trunks to send into the schools meeting various curriculum in grades 2-6.

Qualifications:  Prefer experience creating informal interactive lesson plans, interest in art or anthropology, and experience working with people of various ages.

Other Information:  Intern would report to the Museum Educator.  Hours are flexible but we prefer that students work at least one full day once a week for 15 weeks or the equivalent number of hours for fewer weeks.  Exceptions are made on a case by case basis.

 

Exhibits Intern
Duties:  The intern will develop skills in interpretation and presentation by assisting with the research, design, and installation of changing exhibits.  The intern will learn about preventive conservation of artifacts while performing object rotations in permanent exhibits.

Qualifications:  Strong interest in art and culture.  Previous experience working with collections is preferred.

Other Information:  Intern would report to the Collections Manager. 

Collections Intern
Duties:  Interns will gain valuable and practical experience in the registration process of objects and archival collections.  This includes inventories, condition reports, photographing or scanning objects, labeling, indexing, cataloging, and housing.  Preventive conservation techniques will be used to provide a safe environment for the collections.  Data entry of collections records in PastPerfect software. 
Qualifications:  Previous experience working with collections is preferred.  Must be computer savvy. 
Other Information:  Intern would report to the Collections Manager. 

Commitment
Internships may last from eight weeks to one year depending on the students’ goals and the museum’s needs. Interns are expected to work at least 100 hours over the course of their internship regardless of the length of the internship.  Hours are flexible but we prefer that students work at least one full day once a week for 15 weeks or the equivalent number of hours for fewer weeks.  Exceptions are made on a case by case basis.  Hours must be worked during business hours 9:30 am – 5:30 pm, Monday through Saturday.  The museum is open to the public 10 am – 5 pm, Monday through Saturday, 10am – 8pm Thursday, and 11am – 4pm Sunday.  Interns will be treated as staff and should commit to the internship as they would a paid position.

The Halle Heart Center Museum

Tempe

The American Heart Association's Halle Heart Center Museum, located in Tempe, is a Museum about the cardiovascular system. We are looking for long-term volunteers to give tours to school age children.

Volunteers must enjoy working with children and want to teach students about the cardiovascular system and heart healthy life skills. Experience is not necessary, we will fully train, but training is intense and depending on experience can last up to a month. When training is completed, volunteers are able to choose their own hours. Tours are generally scheduled 10 am-noon, Monday-Friday.

Skills

  • Must be out-going and have excellent communications skills
  • Must have customer service skills; be able to interact with new people
  • Must love teaching and enjoy working with children
  • Some lifting is required, max of 25 lbs.
  • Must have reliable transportation

Mondays, October 5, 12, 19, 26, and November 2, 9:00am – 12:30pm

  • This training will cover archeology, paleontology, geology, interpretation techniques, customer service and how it relates to the museum. You will be trained in all exhibition areas of the museum. After training you are asked to commit to one shift a week as a Gallery Interpreter.   • Museum Store Volunteer:
    Greet customers, offer assistance, comprehend all cash register & bagging procedures, know opening and closing procedures, straighten and restock. Must be able to stand for 4 hours. Must be proficient in ringing up sales on register and provide excellent customer service within 30 days of start date. We will train you on the cash register and other procedures.

    Available Shifts:
    Tuesdays: 1pm – 5pm
    Wednesday: 10am – 1pm & 1pm – 5pm
    Thursday: 10am - 1pm & 1pm – 5pm
    Friday: 10am – 1pm & 1pm – 5pm

Rosson House Museum

Tour Guides and More...

The Rosson House at Historic Heritage Square is looking for volunteers. If you are interested in guiding tours, selling tickets, acting in our Readers Theater or Step Back in Time groups we have a place for you.

Perhaps you are artistic and would like to help merchandise the gift shop? Maybe you would like to learn other late 19th century hands-on activities for fun and to share with the visiting public at our events or in the Hands-On Heritage House? If yes, we would love to meet you.

Please contact the Rosson House Museum Office. Historic Heritage Square is located at 6th Street and Monroe in downtown Phoenix.

One must join as a member to participate in Rosson House docent, “Step back in Time”, and or “Readers’ Theater programs.

  • Rosson House Tour Guide/Docent Program - We provide the training and an enjoyable, historic atmosphere. Docents are asked to sign up for a four-hour time frame once a month minimum. The house and its furnishings are addictive! To download the volunteer training handbook click on the icon below.
  • Become a Block Walk or Downtown Phoenix Walking Tour Docent! Are you interested in becoming a walking tour docent for the Heritage Square Block Walk tour or the Downtown Phoenix Walking Tour? Contact us today to receive this unique study guide and orientation for docent certification! Both of these tours are available October – April and are outside walking tours with a focus on architecture and the history of Phoenix’s Downtown growth in the 19th and 20th centuries.
  • Be a Star at our Special Events. Attention school & home school groups, scouts, individuals, historians, hobbyists, families, businesses and clubs: Perhaps you have or belong to a group that would like to present or staff a historical activity or demonstration (i.e.: corn husk doll making, butter churning, poetry reading, caroling, quilting, 19th century games, creating gingerbread houses?...) at one of our special events or on a Saturday here at Historic Heritage Square? Maybe you or your organization/club have historical artifacts or cultural perspectives you would like to share with the visiting public? It’s a great way to team build, learn new things and share with your community as well as have fun! Send in your idea today!
  • Step Back in Time Players - A fun and informative program to be involved in! Members portray various individuals from Phoenix’s 1890s era such as Mrs. Rosson, Dr. Rosson, their children and friends in a “first person” interpretation (just as if you were living in the late 19th century) for visitors touring the Rosson House. The Step Back in Time Players meet during the year to prepare for this special program which is conducted several times throughout the season.

Tovrea Castle & Carraro Cactus Garden located at 5041 E. Van Buren in Phoenix has Volunteer Opportunities. Do you like history, gardening and or working with the public?

Phoenix Parks and Recreation is looking for people interested in joining our exciting volunteer program at Tovrea Castle & Carraro Cactus Garden. This engaging historic site comprises of approx. 44 acres featuring the late 1920s Tovrea Castle, the beautiful Carraro Cactus Garden, and the mystery that surrounds it.

Assistance is needed and training is provided in the following areas: Gardening Planting, weeding, caretaking, Castle & Garden Tours tours, guides/docents, keepsake sales, guest parking.

The Arizona Capitol Museum

Volunteers

The Arizona Capitol Museum is now accepting volunteers for the following positions:

  • Museum Guides: Provide tours for visitors.
  • Rotunda Ambassadors: Welcome visitors and provide directions for the museum and Capitol grounds.
  • Museum Store Customer Service: Assist the manager in the day to day operation of the Capitol Museum Store. Help complete customer purchases, and maintain the displays.

Training can begin at any time, and we will work with your schedule to provide the volunteer experience you are looking for. 

Must be available weekdays, daytime hours.

Arizona Museum for Youth

Volunteer Education Aide

Position Open: Monday, March 24, 2008 until sufficient applications received.
Hours: Tues - Sat, 10-1 or 1-4
            Sunday 12-4


Education Aides Position Description: 

  • Serve as hosts at the Arizona Museum for Youth to provide a welcoming atmosphere to the public.
  • Serve as interpreters and tour guides for children and adults visiting the exhibitions, helping to provide a deeper understanding and appreciation of the artwork.
  • Help prepare classes or be present during classroom and birthday parties.

Qualifications:  Strong passion and excitement for learning and teaching about art. Strong attention to detail, and a respectful attitude for all points of view. An Education Aide must be 18 years of age or older.

Special Requirement:  Successful completion of a background investigation is required.
